“Cities” is a musical representation of the hustle and bustle of the city, with mechanical, driving, high-energy and fast-paced rhythms dominating a bebop style music. The middle swing ballad showcases the lead trumpet soloist’s range and lyricism.

“Mountains” has two distinct sections: the first half is Delbert Anderson’s “Narbona,” specifically requested by the commissioners, rearranged for this unique instrumentation; the second half is a primitive, almost barbaric groove that steadily builds in complexity and tempo, before fusing with the themes of “Narbona” in a mysterious conclusion.

“Deserts” features the drum set prominently. With a quasi Bossa Nova style depiction of the Oregon eastern deserts, which frame at the beginning and end an ethereal depiction of desert mirages.
