A General Treatise (2013)

Solo Male Voice and Piano

Grade 2

A great piece for younger singers or for an easy and humorous addition to any vocal recital, "A General Treatise (On the Superiority of Moustaches to Naked Upper Lips)" makes lighthearted fun of the facial (and vocal) changes that accompany puberty.

The Darkest Evening of the Year (2013)

Solo Male Voice and Piano

Grade 4

A melodic and sweeping work, filled with a variety of changing moods and tempi, "The Darkest Evening of the Year" is a tone poem based on words by Sam Reese - a dark and harrowing tale of life at sea and its often unfortunate ending. Particularly great for advanced high school musicians and younger college musicians.

Commissioned by LaQuetta Carpenter and the University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance for use in the production of "Our Town"

This work is a solemn, reflective, and spacious piece with potential for the performer's lyrical and musical expression at every moment. Especially great for younger players looking to develop musicality and expression while having some mild technical demand.

The Sacral Trees (2015)

Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Band (version for Piano Reduction)

Commissioned by Micheal Muñoz for his nephews, Jayce Abraham and Jordan Thomas

Grade 6

Perhaps my most monumental work, "The Sacral Trees" is a demanding work for the solo clarinet, inspired by Sam Reese's "Sacral Tree Poems" and my time teaching in Pakistan. A common Middle Eastern instrument is the Clarinet in G, which is given homage in this work written for Clarinet in A (an optional Bb part for those without access to a Clarinet in A is included). This is an ideal work for professional or high level college soloists with a depth of expression and an arsenal of technical mastery at their disposal.

Nine (2014)

Concertino for Bass Trombone and Piano

Grade 5

A transcription of my original work for tuba, "Nine" showcases the lower ranges of the instrument, which are often overlooked in most solo repertoire. Three movements seamlessly woven together without pause, the concertino plays with the idea of the number nine - seconds and ninths throughout, time signatures in 9, and a nine-note scale (the "Piland Scale") among others. College and professional players will particularly enjoy this work.

Inverse Concerto (2011)

Soprano Saxophone and Piano

Commissioned by Daniel Pérez

Grade 5

Written to showcase the lyrical and expressive qualities of the soprano saxophone, "Inverse Concerto" is ideally suited for advanced high school players and college performers. The piece presents the concerto inverted, as movements in the order of slow, fast, slow. It also teases the audience by ending every one of the three movements in an unresolved seventh chord, further "inverting" the standard expectations from the audience for a concerto.
